Leadership Philosophy

Seven principles that define how I lead design.

Operating principles refined over 12+ years of leading design in fintech, marketplace, and AI-first products at Intuit, Credit Karma, and LendingClub.

    Design is a business function

    Pixels don't ship. Outcomes do.

    01

I measure design success in revenue, retention, and risk reduction, not pixel precision or aesthetic awards. Every project starts by naming the business metric we're moving and ends by reporting back on it.

    • Tie every initiative to a P&L line
    • Co-author OKRs with PM and Eng
    • Report design outcomes in business language
See it in CK PL Marketplace

The leader's job is to raise the ceiling

I optimize for my team's best work, not mine.

    02

The most leverage I have isn't doing the best design work. It's creating the conditions where my team does the best work of their careers. That means clearing roadblocks, naming ambiguity, and protecting focus time fiercely.

    • Remove blockers before they become escalations
    • Sponsor stretch projects publicly
    • Defend deep-work time from meeting creep
See the Design Org Maturity Roadmap

Quality is a decision, not a standard

'Good' is contextual. Define it explicitly.

    03

I define quality up front for every project: what 'good' means in this context, with this constraint, in this timeline. Without that, teams either over-invest in low-stakes work or rush the things that actually matter.

    • Set quality bars in the kickoff doc
    • Distinguish reversible vs. one-way-door decisions
    • Right-size craft to the audience and risk

What you can't measure, you can't improve

Instrument the experience before you redesign it.

    04

Before launching a redesign, I make sure we have a baseline: funnel completion, task time, qualitative friction signals, NPS deltas. If we can't tell whether the new version won, we didn't ship a redesign, we shipped a refresh.

    • Define the success metric in the brief
    • Baseline before, measure after
    • Pair quant data with qualitative diaries
    See the UX Signal Pyramid

    Cross-functional alignment is the product

Design that doesn't survive handoff isn't finished.

    05

Work that doesn't survive engineering handoff, legal review, or PM prioritization isn't shipped. It's aspirational. I treat alignment with PM, Eng, Research, Legal, and Marketing as a core deliverable, not an afterthought.

    • Co-create with Eng from week one
    • Run pre-mortems with Legal and Risk
    • Make the trade-offs visible in writing
See the CK Tax Report case study

    AI changes the design object

We're designing trust, not just interfaces.

    06

In deterministic products, we design interfaces. In AI-first products, we design trust architectures: explainability, recovery paths, model boundaries, and the moments where the human stays in the loop.

    • Design for graceful failure, not happy paths
    • Make model confidence visible
    • Build human-override into every flow
See the AI Design Decision Model

    Hire for judgment, not taste

Taste can be coached. Judgment is harder to find.

    07

Taste can be developed through reps and exposure. Judgment, knowing when to push, when to ship, when to ask a harder question, is what separates good designers from exceptional ones. I hire for it relentlessly.

    • Interview with real, ambiguous problems
    • Probe trade-off reasoning, not portfolios alone
    • Reference-check for decision-making, not just delivery
