Penpot is an open-source interface design and prototyping platform. Its layout tools use web concepts such as flex and grid, giving designers and developers a shared way to discuss structure.
When to use it
You want to design and discuss responsive interfaces, including in a team that needs a self-hosting option.
What you need: Access to Penpot and a simple screen to recreate.
Try a small build
A suggested exercise to help you evaluate the resource.
- Create a board for a profile settings screen with a heading, two fields, and a save action.
- Use layout controls to define alignment and spacing, then resize the board to see which decisions hold up.
- Turn one repeated element into a component and connect two screens in a prototype.
You should end up with: A small responsive layout with a reusable component and a clickable flow.
Keep in mind
A prototype communicates intent; production behavior and accessibility still need implementation and testing.
